EU announcement: From August, titanium dioxide (E 171)
DATE: 2022-12-27

The Regulation has a transition period of 6 months from its entry into force, during which food products containing E171 can continue to be placed on the EU market and sold. Foods containing E171 can continue to be used safely until August 7, 2022, as no immediate risk has been identified.

In order to continue to allow the use of titanium dioxide as a colorant in medicines, titanium dioxide will remain on the list of authorized additives until further notice. The reason for this decision was to avoid shortages of drugs containing the dye, while also investigating and testing alternatives to titanium dioxide to ensure that the quality, safety and efficacy of the drug were not compromised.
